I like many are saddened about the injuries and deaths associated with the bombing that happened yesterday at the Boston Marathon. But, we have to realize that this type of tragedy while awful is rare and something that can not really be prevented. In a free society with all the laws against murder and injuring individuals people are still going to act out due to what ever motivation. Sadly the news media and some politicians have not pushed this message and instead decided ramp up the fear factor and push for new security measures and spending on these items.
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee tries to tie the sequester to bombing at the marathon yesterday. (21:22 Mark). Now as Forbes Magazine as well as the Congressional Budget Report has pointed out that the sequester is actually not cutting spending. In fact at the end of the decade there will be $110 billion in increased spending. All the shutting down of programs like head start and the White House Tours are all just grandstanding by the government to try manufacture fear over the sequester.
The left was not the only side to focus on this issue and try to drum up support for programs they want to spend more money. Take Rep. Peter King (R-NY) who is on the House Intelligence Committee. He pushed for more money to spend on militarizing police forces. He wants more cameras and he wasted no time in using the eight year victim who died as a prop to push his agenda. He also is using this tragedy to justify the NY Police Departments Stop and Frisk approach to policing which has been shown to be in effective in stopping any real crimes (see here).
Though frisk are to be conducted only when an officer reasonably suspects the person has a weapon that might endanger officer safety, 55.7 percent of those stopped in 2011 were frisked. Of those frisked, a weapon was found only 1.9 percent of the time.
There are countless other examples of both sides looking to score points on the back of this tragedy. But, the only people they are looking to protect and help are themselves.
