Representative Daryl Metcalfe , Rep. Kathy Rapp, Rep. Fred Keller, Rep. Jim Cox, Rep. Jerry Knowles, and Rep. Stephen Bloom all have signed on to make PA a place where one can apply for work without force union membership. These members of the PA State House have offered 6 bills that will move PA to the 25 right to work state in the nation. These bills are as follows

House Bill 50 (Metcalfe) This legislation would prohibit employment from being conditional upon membership or non-membership in a labor organization. Compulsory dues would be prohibited for non-union members and would apply to both public and private sector employees.

House Bill 51 (Rapp) This legislation prohibits labor organizations from collecting compulsory union dues from non-union public school employees.

House Bill 52 (Keller, F.) This legislation prohibits labor organizations from collecting compulsory union dues from non-union state employees.

House Bill 53 (Cox) This legislation prohibits labor organizations from collecting compulsory union dues from non-union local government employees.

House Bill 54 (Knowles) This legislation would prohibit employment from being conditional upon membership or non-membership in a labor organization. Compulsory dues would be prohibited for non-union members and would apply to only private sector employees.

House Bill 250 (Bloom) This legislation would permit public employees to opt out of their union membership at any time during their contract. Currently, under the Public Employee Relations Act, employees can only opt out of their union membership 15 days prior to the expiration of their contract. This legislation would provide public employees the freedom to terminate their union membership at any time.

I don't understand how if the unions think their product is so great they would be against right to work legislation. Any time something is forced on someone and a worker has no choices that's a problem. If we all look at our personal situation and ask ourselves would we like a choice, common sense can only dictate this is the right direction to go.

      Joyce-

You are correct. Right now the unions don't have to do what is best for the membership. They will gain donations regardless and this puts the union members at a huge disadvantage. If it was voluntary and they had to collect dues the services they offer their members would be explicitly defined and they would have an incentive to perform a service. I have no problem with that type of union as it works in favor of the members and keeps them from pushing for short term gains.
